Oklahoma Smoke BBQ is all about the beef ... literally.
The recently opened joint is located in the heart of Stockyards City, Oklahoma City’s historic stockyard district that still holds regular cattle markets and where longhorns parade down the street during community events.
So it feels a bit strange to open with praise for the pork ribs, but that’s what stole the show for me during my first visit.
Smoked with pecan wood, the lightly seasoned ribs had a mild smokiness flavor, allowing the meat’s sweetness to shine through. The color and consistency were near perfect as each bite was soft without being too tender.
The brisket was solid, as you’d expect in this cow-centric place. The slices might have been a bit too thickly sliced but were still plenty tender. Like the ribs, the brisket wasn’t overpowered by smoke or seasoning.
I didn’t necessarily expect to write about a BBQ restaurant I visited on its first day. A new place should be given some patience to work out the kinks and fine-tune the smoker.
While I’m sure Oklahoma Smoke BBQ will improve, they already seemed to be hitting a stride that I felt was worth some praise.
I also enjoyed the restaurant’s vintage diner feel and bar seating.
The menu goes beyond BBQ with sandwiches, burgers, and several breakfast plates. The “Sunrise in a Border Town” caught my attention with its brisket, eggs, Mexican rice, beans and a tortilla. I’ll be back.
